Dan has a unique background in Journalism and Computer Science. After graduation from the University of Michigan with a BA in computer science, Dan spent six years as programmer and consultant. He then attended the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and graduated with an MS in Journalism in 1989. For six years Dan worked as a reporter at The Record of Hackensack in New Jersey and the Raleigh News and Observer in North Carolina. Dan then returned to the technology field working at Time Inc. New Media, TheStreet.com, and CapitalThinking.

During this experience Dan has developed skills as a writer, technology analyst, and marketer of technology. His relevant experience includes:

  White Papers

A clear explanation of a key technology or issue related to a product can be an excellent tool for sales calls or use in public relations. Such material can be place on a brochure-ware web site to add heft and pique the interest of the technical buyer. Dan recommends short, crisply written white papers with explanatory graphics.

Books

Writing "the book" on something is a great way to demonstrate leadership. A book also provides a powerful marketing tool and an excellent leave behind for the sales staff. Dan can help prepare a book proposal, market the book to publishers, write the book, and arrange for self-publishing if necessary.
  Sales Materials

Choosing the right visual metaphor to explain a product can make the difference between instant recognition of the essence of a product and a blank stare. Dan has crafted hundreds of such metaphors that helped him succeed in selling millions of dollars worth of software to large IT organizations such as JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup, Compuserve, and Fannie Mae. Dan recommends making two separate pitches, one to the business buyer and one to the technology buyer.

Public Relations Strategy

Public Relations is the best marketing investment for a small or medium-sized company. Using his experience as a reporter, Dan can help craft story ideas, write draft articles, and prepare backgrounders that will generate coverage in the trade and mainstream press.
